🚀 GkPackage 18 has been updated to offer maximum compatibility. This new version runs natively and smoothly in both Wayland and X11 environments, guaranteeing optimal performance regardless of your Linux distribution's display server.

GkPackage Software Manager for AppImage is a voluntary and nonprofit (GPL license) project. And everything possible is done to ensure that everything work good and it's safe to install. If you decide to install this AppImage app in your Linux system you do it at your own risk.

GkPackage is a comprehensive manager for AppImages, a format designed for distributing portable software on Linux. An AppImage is a single file that functions similarly to an ISO image; it's mounted in a read-only folder within the temporary directory: /tmp. An AppImage contains files and folders essential to the software's operation, such as /etc, /opt, /usr/bin, and /usr/share.

Note:
Self-executing (or self-installing) applications have been around for a long time but have recently gained popularity. The most popular formats are Snap (from Ubuntu) and Flatpak (from Red Hat and Fedora).

While Snap, Flatpak, and AppImage offer similar functionality, each does so differently. AppImages, for example, are comparable to MacOS ".dmg" files.

They can also be compared to Windows portable ".exe" files, which can be run or installed on any computer running Windows.
Similarly, ".AppImage" files can be run or installed on any computer running Linux, regardless of the distribution used (such as Ubuntu, Debian, Fedora, etc.).

This new version of GkPackage 18 not only manages all your AppImages, it also has a...

With the new "Quick Start AppImage" feature, you can quickly and easily open the AppImage directly from your file explorer.

Just select the desired AppImage and choose between two options:
  1. "Open with GkPackage Software Manager": Access advanced features such as:
    • Install or reinstall for the current user.
    • Global install or reinstall for all users.
    • Global install or reinstall for all users with root password, useful for AppImages that require root permissions, such as Gparted.
    • Create desktop shortcuts.
    • Extract the AppImage to a folder of your choice.
    • Launch the selected AppImage without having to set execution permissions, all in a flash!

🚀 "Running AppImage"
GkPackage 12.0 introduces a new important feature that allows you to view a list of all currently running AppImages. This feature, called "Running AppImage," can be activated directly from the minimized GkPackage icon, without having to open the main interface.

Alternatively, it can be accessed via the "Running AppImage" button located at the bottom of the main GkPackage interface, or from the GkPackage-Tools Applications menu.

The "Running AppImage" feature offers the following options:

  • Terminate (force close) the selected AppImage
  • Close the selected AppImage
  • Close all open AppImages
  • Refresh the list of active AppImages
GkPackage also provides the community with

Creating a repository is a very simple process through the interface
Graphical, which is divided into two phases.

In the first phase, you must provide three links:
  • Link to the AppImage
  • Link to the application icon
  • Link to a screenshot of the application

Alternatively, you can select the icon and screenshot directly in the same graphical interface, using the "icons" and "screenshot" buttons.

In the second phase, it is important to verify that the icon and screenshot are correct. You must specify the category (required) and provide a description of the application (optional, but recommended).

Additionally, it is recommended to add a link to the application's web page and, if available, a link to a demo video (both optional, but recommended).

From the terminal, run the command: gkrepo This is a comprehensive tool that allows you to: Update, Delete, and Extract repositories:
    file-name.GkRepo
    🌟 "Local AppImage" 🌟
At the bottom left of the main GkPackage GUI, you'll find the "Local
AppImage" section. Here you can view all installed and uninstalled AppImages on your system.
👉 Double-clicking a selected AppImage will open a new window with the following options:

  • Install or reinstall for the current user
  • Install or reinstall globally for all users
  • Install or reinstall globally with root permissions (great for AppImages like GParted)
  • Create desktop shortcuts
  • Extract the AppImage to a folder of your choice
  • Launch the selected AppImage

GkPackage installs the AppImage in the hidden folder /home/ user/.GkAppImageLocal/applications. The AppImage is only available to a single user; if you install for all users, the AppImage is installed in /opt/AddRemove_AppsPortable/GkAppImageOpt/ applications.
GkPackage makes managing your AppImages easy! Final note:
As mentioned with the "Quick Start AppImage," there's no need to
manually grant or set execution permissions; they're assigned automatically. It's important to note, however, that the user must own the folder containing the AppImages. If the folder is owned by Root or another user, GkPackage won't be able to grant execute permissions to the selected AppImage.

GkPackage offers much more than what's listed here.

Important Note:
The AppImage repositories are 7z files named > name.GkRepo, and they are compatible with GitLab, GitHub, Dropbox, Google Drive (experimental, not recommended), or other websites, or directly from the AppImage developer's website.
This alternative is primarily aimed at experts or Linux distribution developers interested in installing GkPackage by default, choosing which AppImage of GkPackage should be included for their Linux distribution.
Moreover, those who wish to contribute to the distribution of the software in AppImage format through the GkPackage repositories will find everything much simpler.
Even users who want to create custom repositories can do so without any problem.
